Eligibility to apply for a Vanier CGS

A Vanier CGS applicant needs to be able to:

  • Own a Vanier CGS quota and be nominated by only one Canadian university;
  • Enrolled in a PhD program that demands a significant and documented research component at this time. Joint programs such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, or JD/PhD fall under this category.
  • Plan to pursue research and doctorate studies full-time at the nominating institution in the academic year or summer semester that follows the release of the result.
  • Have finished no more than 20 months of study in my current program full-time. The months of finished courses are calculated starting on the day the doctorate was enrolled.
  • The months of study completed are calculated from the date of doctoral enrollment for students who enroll directly from a bachelor’s degree to a doctorate (without first enrolling in a master’s program).
  • Previous enrollment in and successful completion of a post-baccalaureate master’s program. The months of study that have been finished are calculated starting on the day that the master’s program was first enrolled.
  • Meet your institution’s requirements for a first-class grade point average, or its equivalent, in each of your last two years of full-time study. It is recommended that applicants check with the school what constitutes a first-class average.
  • To enroll in or finish a PhD program, they also cannot currently have or have had a doctoral-level fellowship or scholarship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC.

Please be aware that funding is only available for the Ph.D. portion of joint programs.

Eligibility of program of study

To be eligible, doctorate programs must include a significant amount of research that leads to an institutionally or expertly reviewed thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital, or exhibit; these activities must be required to graduate from the program.

Study programs with a clinical focus, like clinical psychology, and collaborative graduate research programs leading to professional degrees (like MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, or JD/PhD) are also acceptable as long as they have a significant independent research component, as previously mentioned.

Evaluation criteria

The selection committees will evaluate and choose the nominees based on how equally weighted the following three criteria are:

  • Academic Brilliance
  • Prospects for Research Potential
  • Proven Leadership Ability
